Business environment has become highly competitive and demanding over the years, with ever growing customer expectations of better products and services at lower costs. Business leaders are therefore increasingly focused on providing higher quality products and services in an economical manner. They face the significant challenges of growing revenues and reducing costs while providing a higher level of customer support.
In order to achieve these contradictory goals, there has been a sharp focus on reducing the costs of business support activities. One such group of activities is Information Technology or IT.
A new paradigm in Information Technology, thin clients and server based computing provides an excellent option for better managing the IT environment while at the same time cutting down on IT costs significantly.
The basic approach behind thin clients and server based computing is simple. Instead of installing and running applications locally on PCs, applications are installed and executed from central servers. This eliminates the nightmare of managing applications over hundreds of PCs, quite often geographically dispersed, with the attendant problems of deployment, maintenance, data security, reliability and cost. In essence, it is the mainframe computing model of yesteryears but with a friendly and familiar user interface. All the benefits of centralized servers and systems personnel are achieved as also the advantages of user friendly Windows interface, including common Windows applications such as Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer.
